| Definition: | A nyloc nut, also referred to as a nylon-insert lock nut, polymer-insert lock nut, or elastic stop nut, is a kind of locknut with a nylon collar that increases friction on the screw thread. |
| Description: |
The nylon collar insert is placed at the end of the nut, with an inner diameter (ID) slightly smaller than the major diameter of the screw. The screw thread does not cut into the nylon insert, however, the insert deforms elastically over the threads as tightening pressure is applied. The insert locks the nut against the screw as a result of friction, caused by the radial compressive force resulting from the deformation of the nylon. Nyloc nuts retain their locking ability up to 250 °F (121 °C). |
| Application: | The Nyloc Nut is an economic locking nut and ideal in applications where vibration or motion could loosen or undo the nut. The nut can also be used to assist sealing the bolt thread against seepage of oil, water, petrol, paraffin and other liquids. Nyloc Clinch Nuts are available in various thread sizes, are manufactured from electro zinc plated carbon steel and 300 series stainless steel and are suitable for installation in ductile steel and aluminium panels with a recommended maximum hardness of 70 HRB. | Others: | The addition of the non-metal component means that the nylon insert nut is more temperature and chemical sensitive. It also necessitates the use of a tool for installation, however, the revolution speed must be less than 150 RPM in order to avoid over heating the nylon insert. |
