Product Description

ASME B18.2.1 Carbon Steel Zinc Coating Hex Head Lag Bolt Lag Screw

Lag Screw

Type: Lag Screw
Definition: Lag screws are primarily designed to be screwed into wood. Functionally, they are larger and stronger wood screws with hex heads. Lag screws are some of the toughest types of screws out there.
Description:

Also called lag bolts, lag screws are generally used to connect heavy lumber and other materials that bear an intense load. The name lag screw derives from their original use in securing barrel staves, also known as lags.
Application: A lag screw is used to compress fracture fragments. It is threaded into the opposite cortex, and slides through a hole in the near cortex. Tightening the screw presses the screw head against the near cortex, compressing the fracture fragments. Optimally, a lag screw should be perpendicular to the fracture plane.
Others: A lag screw requires a hole drilled at the same diameter as the shaft of the screw, a gimlet point helps pull the screw into the hole and tap its thread.

Typically, lag screw sizes range from 1/4" to 3/4" in diameter, and lengths span from about 1" to 16". Length is measured from under the head to the threaded tip of the screw. Head sizes vary with the size of the screw.
