Type: | Wood Screw |
Definition: | Wood screws are threaded fasteners that are used to connect wood to wood. They're threaded coarsely, but not all the way up. They differ from lag screws because they thread their way through the wood as they're screwed in, whereas lag screws require you to drill a hole first. |
Description: |
Wood Screw Head Types: Slot head screws are the most common variety used for driving the screw. Phillips head screws have much greater functionality than the slot head variety. Square drive or Robertson screws have a number of advantages over the Phillips head variety. |
Application: | How do I choose wood screws? The general rule of thumb is that the screw should enter at least half the thickness of the bottom material, the other factor is the screw's diameter, or gauge. Screws come in gauges 2 through 16. Most of the time you'll want to go with a #8 screw. |
Others: | Wood screws are simply known as "wood screws" because they are designed for use with wooden workpieces, but wood screws are also available in many of the same metals and alloys as other screws. |
