What's Special About Drywall Screws? As the name suggests, drywall screws are specifically designed for fastening plasterboard to either metal or timber. Typically, drywall screws are light and have deeper threads designed to help the screws stay in place against the drywall. |
| Application: | Field: Any part of the drywall that is not an edge; the large central part of the drywall sheet. Screws should be placed about 1/2-inch to 3/8-inch away from the very edge of the drywall sheet. The conventional wisdom seems to be that drywall screws are not suitable for woodworking projects because: a) they are too brittle and can snap off if over tightened or overstressed, b) their threads are not coarse enough to securely grip the wood, and c) because the entire shank is threaded, this can force the pieces to come out. |
| Others: | A general rule of thumb is that drywall screws should be installed every 12 inches. This means that when using 48-inch wide sheets, you will have 5 screws in each stud when the sheets are hung perpendicular to the framing; two on the edges and 3 in the field. |
